Kilobyte to Megabit Converter
Digital storage · unit-converter
Convert Kilobyte to Megabit with fixed input and output units, a step-by-step formula line, and reference tables. This hub uses decimal byte units (kB, MB, GB, …) and decimal megabits; the main converter also includes binary (KiB, MiB, …) units.

About Kilobyte
The kilobyte (KB) is 10³ bytes (decimal kB). Binary KiB (1024 B) is a separate unit in the main converter (kibibyte).
About Megabit
The megabit (Mb) is 10⁶ bits. Dividing by 8 gives byte-equivalents for data size; ISP speeds (Mbps) refer to megabits per second, not megabytes.
How to convert kilobytes to megabits
1 kilobyte is equal to 0.008 megabit in this tool (values are compared in byte-equivalents):
1 kb = (1,000 B ÷ 125,000 B) mbit = 0.008 mbit
Each kilobyte counts as 1,000 bytes and each megabit as 125,000 bytes, so one kb equals 1,000 ÷ 125,000 mbit = 0.008 mbit.
Let d(kb) be the numeric amount in Kilobyte (kb), and d(mbit) the amount in Megabit (mbit). Then:
d(mbit) = d(kb) × (1,000 / 125,000)
Equivalently, divide by how many kb fit into one mbit (bytes per mbit divided by bytes per kb):
d(mbit) = d(kb) ÷ 125
Or: megabit = kilobyte ÷ 125
Examples
Example #1: Convert 1 kb to megabit
1 kb = 1 kb × (1,000/125,000) mbit = 0.008 mbit
1 kb = 1 kb ÷ 125 = 0.008 mbit
Example #2: Convert 10 kb to megabit
10 kb = 10 kb × (1,000/125,000) mbit = 0.08 mbit
10 kb = 10 kb ÷ 125 = 0.08 mbit
Summary
To convert Kilobyte to Megabit, multiply the value in kb by the ratio of bytes per kb divided by bytes per mbit. Equivalently: value_mbit = value_kb × (1000 / 125000). Numerically, 1 kb equals 0.008 mbit.
Relationship context
You are converting between byte-based units (decimal SI: kB, MB, GB, …) (Kilobytes) and bit-based units (converted via 8 bits per byte) (Megabits). Bit units are mapped through 8 bits per byte, then scaled with the same decimal prefixes as byte units. The numeric factor is 8.000000e-3.
