Byte to Bit Converter

Digital storage · unit-converter

Convert Byte to Bit with fixed input and output units, a step-by-step formula line, and reference tables. This hub uses decimal byte units (kB, MB, GB, …) and decimal megabits; the main converter also includes binary (KiB, MiB, …) units.

About Byte

The byte is eight bits and is the usual addressable unit for files and memory. This converter expresses every unit in byte-equivalents using fixed factors.

About Bit

A bit is a binary digit. Here 1 byte = 8 bits, so the byte-equivalent of one bit is 0.125 bytes. Networking speeds often use bits per second.

How to convert bytes to bits

1 byte is equal to 8 bit in this tool (values are compared in byte-equivalents):

1 b = (1 B ÷ 0.125 B) bit = 8 bit

1 byte = 8 bits exactly.

Each byte counts as 1 bytes and each bit as 0.125 bytes, so one b equals 1 ÷ 0.125 bit = 8 bit.

Let d(b) be the numeric amount in Byte (b), and d(bit) the amount in Bit (bit). Then:

d(bit) = d(b) × (1 / 0.125)

Equivalently, divide by how many b fit into one bit (bytes per bit divided by bytes per b):

d(bit) = d(b) ÷ 0.125

Or: bit = byte ÷ 0.125

Examples

Example #1: Convert 1 b to bit

1 b = 1 b × (1/0.125) bit = 8 bit

1 b = 1 b ÷ 0.125 = 8 bit

Example #2: Convert 10 b to bit

10 b = 10 b × (1/0.125) bit = 80 bit

10 b = 10 b ÷ 0.125 = 80 bit

Summary

To convert Byte to Bit, multiply the value in b by the ratio of bytes per b divided by bytes per bit. Equivalently: value_bit = value_b × (1 / 0.125). Numerically, 1 b equals 8 bit.

Relationship context

You are converting between byte-based units (decimal SI: kB, MB, GB, …) (Bytes) and bit-based units (converted via 8 bits per byte) (Bits). Bit units are mapped through 8 bits per byte, then scaled with the same decimal prefixes as byte units. The numeric factor is 8.000000e+0.
